Creating An Effective Opt-In List

Creating An Effective Opt-In List

Many people know how the highest-paid affiliate marketers use opt-in lists, but can’t figure out how to implement their offers or lists properly to drive sales.

Building a Strong Offer

A strong, effective offer consists of five parts:
1. An attention-grabbing headline: You need to tell your customer up front what you can offer him.  Think “what can my information do for my visitors?”
Bad headline: “Enter your e-mail below so I can send you more information about how I made it online.”
Good headline: “Learn how I made $10,000 last month – and you can too!”
2. A unique, single opportunity offer: Give your customer some immediate benefit for signing up.  Offer an e-course, e-book, pamphlet, or some other incentive to get people on your list.
3. Light a fire under their butts: If your customer feels that this is a one-time offer, or an offer that will not be available forever, they are much more likely to commit immediately.
It’s always a good idea to let your opt-ins know that you won’t share their e-mail, so include some “fine print” to let them know their information is safe with you.

Sending Appropriate E-mails

Rule 1 of autoresponders is if you spam your customers, they will NOT buy from you.
Don’t be stupid about e-mailing people on your opt-in list.  I like to send one sales pitch or review per 5-10 e-mails.  Strive for quality content which will bring customers back to your site.  You don’t have to sell people in just an e-mail.  Always try to drive traffic back to your site first.
Never send more than one sales pitch per four or five quality e-mails.  If you break this rule, you will lose former customers with whom you already have a strongly established bond.
Try to give teasers to articles on your site.  Like I said, the goal is to increase traffic back to your site.
If you have targeted traffic at your site that you want to be in contact with, you NEED an autoresponder.  I personally use AWeber, as their services are very cheap, easy to set up, and very flexible.

How to Pick a Profitable Market

How to Pick a Profitable Market

One of the most frequently asked questions in internet marketing is, “How do I find a market that’s both profitable and suitable for me?”
There are two different approaches to picking your market. Marketing experts say that you should pick a market that is “profitable” or “a hot market with little competition.”
Unfortunately, unless you have years of experience marketing different products, this approach will not work for you.
The second approach is, “pick something you know everything about.” This works well for the inexperienced marketer when the niche ends up being profitable, but it ends up bankrupting him 80% of the time.
So what’s the best way to come up with a viable niche?
Write down a list of five things you would consider yourself an expert in, and a different list of five things you’re interested in but want to know more about.
From this list, pick the three that are the most profitable. A good way to gauge how profitable a market can be is the SVIA ratio (search volume : indexed articles ).
If a keyword gets searched 1,000 times per month and has 5 million indexed articles, you probably won’t be anywhere near the top in your market. However, if it gets searched 1 million times per month and has 100,000 articles, you have a pretty good shot of getting close to the top and having decent traffic from search engines.
Also, check the number of PPC ads for your keywords. If there are no Google AdWords ads on the search page but the keyword gets plenty of searches, you may have found a gold mine.
Thanks guys, see you next time!

6 Ways to Increase Site Traffic For Free

6 Ways to Increase Site Traffic For Free

One of the questions I’m always being asked is, “Connor, how can I increase the targeted traffic being driven to my site cheaply or for free?”  I realize that not everyone has a monthly advertising budget over $1,000, so here are a few ways to increase your traffic for free.

1. Article Marketing

One of the best ways to establish yourself on the web is to become an expert in a field.  If people remember your name or your site after receiving some good quality information from you, they will almost definitely come back to your site later.
This is exactly the kind of traffic you want.  You want to build a relationship with your customer.  Keep providing quality information and your customer will keep coming back, time after time.
With that in mind, submitting articles to the many article directories out there will drive tons of very high quality traffic to your site while establishing you as an expert in your field.

2. YouTube Videos

YouTube is becoming a more and more competitive area for internet marketers, however, it is still a great place to receive a good quantity of traffic.  If you’re a strong speaker or have the talent for putting professional videos together, DO IT!  YouTube videos are 100% on autopilot the minute you upload them, and will drive more and more traffic over time.

3. Start Blogging!

Some people will tell you that blogs are no longer profitable.  They’re lying.  Everyone has a blog nowadays, that is true, but people are always looking for quality, dynamic content.
If you create a relationship with your blog followers and strive to always provide quality content, you will see streams of high quality traffic flowing to your site.

4. Take Advantage of Social Networking

Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, and other social networks receive millions of unique visits per day.  Take advantage of a small percentage of these hordes and you still have a LOT of traffic.
Update your Twitter, Facebook or Myspace account every time you post a new article or have an upcoming event.  People will flock to your site.

5. Link Building

Another way to establish your expert status is to become a regular forum and blog participant.  Always leave thoughtful and useful comments, but NEVER make the focus of your comment your link.
Place your link at the end of a two-to-three paragraph response, or just leave your link in your signature.  Don’t try to sell people on your site, let them sell themselves by showing them you are the expert and your advice is valuable.  Once they feel your advice is valuable to them they will run (and I mean RUN!) to your site.

6. Yahoo! Answers

Another on the “market expert” track – Yahoo! Answers is an easy way to find people who already want your help.  Remember to post your link non-invasively.  Your quality answer comes first, then your link.

What are you waiting for? Get started!

Start implementing these tricks and watch the traffic flow in!  See you guys next time!

How to get quality Traffic to your website

How to get quality Traffic to your website

Traffic gets all the buzz nowadays – everyone wants to know how they can get more traffic to their site.  Many beginner internet marketers follow the “more is better” rule: more site traffic means more $$$ in the bank!
There’s a caveat: you can have all the traffic in the world driven to your site, but if you do not provide quality information and products, your potential customers will be turned off to your site.
Here are a few ways to increase the quality of your content:
Make a List: No one wants to read a 2000-word dissertation on gardening tips.  Turn your theses into easy-to-navigate lists.
Proofread: Think Dave Chappelle: “You graduated from grade school, and you don’t have to take sh*t from anybody.” Show off your 6th grade education by editing your content for grammar mistakes.
KISS: Keep it short and simple! Again, no one wants to read a 2000-word dissertation.
Make it snappy: No one cares how big your vocabulary is.  Write as you would speak to a friend or coworker.
Use Clear Headlines: Let people know what you’re going to talk about right up front.
Write Clearly: Use short, clear sentences.  Don’t try to sound like an academic.
Write for your reader: Don’t write for yourself.  The reader is thinking “What’s In It For Me?”  Always keep WIIFM in mind, and write to answer that question for your reader.
Become the expert: Establish yourself as the authority on your topic.
Answer questions: Always answer reader questions, and write articles to respond to frequently asked questions.
Start using these tips and your writing will dramatically improve!

SEO – What You Need to Know

SEO – What You Need to Know

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an incredibly effective method of generating free traffic to your site. Unfortunately, SEO services can cost you an arm and a leg, and very few people have the SEO know-how to get their page listed on the first page of Google for competitive keywords. Fortunately, there are a cheap and even free resources to get you the piles of traffic you've been waiting for.

1. Long Tail Keywords

You will never beat Wikipedia or “big dog” corporate sites for specific keywords. For example, do you really think it would be realistic to be listed on the first page of Google for a keyword like “video” or “movie”? If so, you need to get your head checked or have very, very deep pockets.
This is why internet marketers use “long tail” keywords, or more specific keywords that are searched less often but have less competition. So, you might be able to make the first page of Google for “home gardening tips” even if you can’t get to the top for “gardening”.

2. Backlinking

Get links posted on forums and sites with high Page Ranks. This will boost your reputation with search engines and get you closer to the top for your chosen keywords.

3. Content

How much content does your site have? Google “likes” sites with at least 10 pages of content. (Not a must, but definitely a plus.)

4. Use header and bold tags

Use your <h1> and <b> tags sparingly but place them around key phrases which include your important keywords and phrases.

5. Get featured

Try to write articles and have them featured in e-zines or guest write for popular blogs and place your link in your article. These links will stay active for a long time and boost your Google ranks.

Monetization: The Right and Wrong Way

Monetization: The Right and Wrong Way

Everyone on the web tries to monetize at some point: after all, web sites are a costly endeavor and everyone wants to at least break even.
However, with so many options for monetizing, many internet marketers hamstring themselves from the start by picking bad products and placing ads poorly.  These mistakes often cause potential customers to leave the site before any sales can be made.
Doing it right is easy, it just takes some experience.  Here’s how I monetize my sites without scaring away my customers.

1. Pick a Relevant Product

I have seen dozens of friends fail at internet marketing (primarily affiliate marketing) because they cannot find a product relevant to the information they provide.  I even had a friend who created an affiliate site to sell hundreds of products he selected at random from ClickBank’s marketplace!
This is foolish.  Don’t consider monetizing until you already have targeted content and traffic, and then find products that are closely related to the information you are providing.

2. Write Honest Reviews

Beginner affiliate marketers think that writing their own sales copy is a legitimate way to generate sales.  Sorry to burst your bubble, but if you have no experience writing sales copy, keep in mind that vendors of “high ticket” items pay top dollar for professional copywriters.  An easy way to generate affiliate sales for internet marketers with niche sites is review marketing.
All you need to do is pick 2-3 products, write a brief review outlining the pros and cons of each, and make a recommendation as to which the customer should buy.
Pros and cons? Yes, this means you should buy the products you are going to sell 99% of the time.  Remember that if you provide customers with false information, they will not come back.
Bonus Tip: Customers are more likely to buy the first and third products you list than the second.  List your “big ticket” item first, your worst item second, and your cheap-but-effective item third.  It works!

3. Don’t Over-Advertise

If you have more than 2 ads on a page, you’re probably guilty of this.  People who see too many ads will realize that you are just trying to milk them for money rather than provide them with quality information, and will run for the hills.  Put your information in the limelight.  Personally, I like to place one ad on the sidebar near the top of the page, and one near the bottom of the page.

4. Use an Opt-In List

Former customers are future customers.  Keep in touch with anyone who is a potential or former customer and send them site updates and new products you may be selling.  I like to send at least 3 e-mails per week, 85% of which are informational or site-related only.  Only 10-15% of your broadcasts should be related to sales pitches.  The higher percentage of sales pitches you use, the more likely your customers are to unsubscribe from your list.

5. Split Test!

For some reason, people have forgotten the value of the split test.  Always run two parallel campaigns to see which generates better results.  When one starts killing the other, drop the one that’s lagging and come up with a new one!  By constantly changing your copy and your ads you’ll constantly improve your conversion rates.

6. Keep it Clean

Keep your site looking clean.  If an ad doesn’t fit with your design or content, drop it immediately.  It won’t convert and it will cause customers to think twice about coming back.

7. Quality First!

The natural order of internet marketing is quality first, then money.  If you stop providing quality content when you monetize, you’ll destroy a valuable resource and lose most (if not all) of your followers.

3. Facebook: Get on Facebook and start telling people about what you do.  You can’t beat actual human networking in the business world.

5. Ask a Friend: Ask a friend to do the same!  The more diggs you have, the more traffic you’ll receive.
6. Get Featured (again!): Get featured on popular blogs, and get into other videos in interviews.  Interviewing gurus is a win-win: the interviewer gets exposure, and the guru gets to boost his ego!

Tips Should I Use Google AdSense?

Increasing Traffic: Site-Targeted AdWords

Tip: Should I Use Google AdSense?,

As an addition to my previous post Monetization Tip: Should I Use Google AdSense?, I thought I would offer a strategy to take advantage of this simple but little-known math.
One of my favorite (and most devious) methods for getting some targeted traffic is placing some site-specific ads using Google AdWords.  First, I come up with a free promotion – a “too-good-to-be-true” type of offer.
Then, I Google search my short-tail keywords and find the top sites in my niche that are using AdSense.
I copy their URL…
And voila!  I’m stealing very targeted traffic from a niche site for a fairly low cost.
If you structure your offer properly and take these visitors to a strong LP, you’ll definitely see not only a huge increase in traffic but also a huge increase in conversions.
Yes, this method is a little shady, but Google offers you this option, so why not take advantage of it?
People argue about Google AdSense (or any targeted PPC content ads) as a steady stream of income.  The hucksters claim to be making millions, some claim to be making hundreds, and some say that it will just cost you traffic.
What’s the real story on AdSense?
The truth is, it all depends on what kind of site you run!
This next part is math-heavy.  I’m a nerd, I like math.   If you aren’t, feel free to skip this part. I won’t be offended.
You’re an affiliate marketer.  You sell a $40 product for a $25 commission with a 1% overall conversion rate.  Your AdSense ads also have a 1% conversion rate and average $0.50/click.
Now, 1% of your total leads are instantly lost to AdSense traffic, earning you an average of $0.005/lead.  The other 99% continue on your site, and 1% buy your product, earning you an average of $0.2475/lead.
So, with AdSense, you earn $.005 + $.2475 = $0.248/lead.
You decide you don’t like AdSense any more, so you drop it.  Now you still have your 1% conversion rate on your affiliate product, which earns you an average of $0.25/lead.
Now, of course, this is a laughably simplistic model.  The point is, if you are selling a high ticket item on your site, why would you want to give up valuable leads to something as minimally profitable as AdSense?  This example doesn’t even take into account the opt-ins and back-end sales you could potentially make!
I recommend AdSense for the pure content site owner.  If you don’t sell a product, there’s no reason not to monetize with PPC advertising.  However, if you’re an affiliate marketer or you sell your own product, leave AdSense behind.  It will hurt more than it will help.
